VERSTAPPEN:
Happy for child not to be a racing driver
F1 | Australian GP |
Max Verstappen stated in the Australian Grand Prix press conference that he would be happy for his child not to become a racing driver.
He said, “I would like my child to choose [their own career] themselves.”
Verstappen knows first hand what it’s like to have a parent who races in Formula 1, with his father, Jos, competing between 1994-2003, spanning Verstappen junior’s childhood.
He grew up around F1 garages and paddocks, and images have previously circulated of Michael Schumacher sharing tender moments with a very young Max , during Schumacher's racing career.
Verstappen is expecting his first child with Kelly Piquet in April, and is step-dad to Kelly's daughter, from a previous relationship to Daniil Kvyat.
Considering his answer in a little more depth, the Dutchman continued:
“I mean of course if he or she wants it [a career in Formula 1], then yeah, you will always do your very best as a parent, you know to provide everything they need or advise.”
The three-time World Champion’s unquestionable success means that he will be able to offer his son or daughter plentiful opportunities to achieve their own dreams, whatever they may be. And, that he wouldn’t be forcing his own desires on his child.
Verstappen concluded, “But I’m also happy if they would choose something else, to be honest.”
